LUSAKA AND EASTERN PROVINCE RECONNECTED.

The Road Development Agency (RDA), in collaboration with the Zambia National Service (ZNS), has successfully completed works on a detour to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic at the washed away section of the Great East Road at Kankumba Stream.

In a statement RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa says installation works on an ACROW Bridge across the washed away section have significantly advanced which will provide a temporary but safe crossing for road users and is expected to be completed by around 18:00 hours today.

Mr. Mulowa says the affected section of the Great East Road at Kankumba Stream was washed away on 25th December 2025 following heavy rainfall experienced in the area which resulted in the loss of approximately five metres of the road embankment due to the failure of an Armco (steel) culvert.

And In a joint statement issued by Lusaka Provincial Administration Principal Public Relations Officer Logic Lukwanda and Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer Paul Shalala say Lusaka and Eastern Province have been reconnected on the Great East road following the washing away of culverts at Kankhumba stream in Rufunssa district.

They says Engineers are closely monitoring traffic on the detour with continuous maintenance, as the surfaces are still extremely wet to ensure safety of all road users at the area.

The team on the ground has been working simultaneously by putting up an Acrow bridge on the actual Great East Road whose works have also significantly progressed.

The placing of an Acrow bridge is expected to be complete in the afternoon today to restore traffic on the main Great East road and move motorists from the detour.
