DMMU RESPONDS TO LUNDAZI FLOODS.

  The National Coordinator of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), Mr. Norman Chipakupaku, accompanied by Zambia National Service (ZNS) Deputy Commander, Major General Reuben Mwewa, has conducted an aerial and ground assessment of the flooding situation in Lundazi District. The assessment was undertaken to establish the full extent of the damage to households and critical public infrastructure and to guide appropriate and timely response interventions. Following the assessments, the team was briefed by the Lundazi District Commissioner, Ms. Majory Banda, who is also the Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC). Preliminary findings indicate that approximately 250 houses have collapsed, while an additional 50 houses are submerged. ZAMBIA MAIZE DEAL FINALLY DELIVERS, BOOSTING MALAWI’S FOOD SECURITY.

  After weeks of anticipation, Malawi’s landmark maize import agreement with Zambia has officially swung into action, marking a major step forward in securing national food supplies and stabilising maize prices. The $77 million (about K134.8 billion) deal has now moved from paper to practice, with the first trucks expected to start arriving in Malawi this weekend. Transporters Association of Malawi Spokesperson Frank Banda confirmed that 50 local transporters have been mobilised to haul up to 100 000 metric tonnes (MT) of maize from Chipata in Eastern Zambia to National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) silos in Lilongwe. Zambian transporters will carry the remaining portion of the consignment. “Our trucks have already started leaving for Chipata after being cleared by NFRA,” said Banda. “We expect maize to start entering the country this weekend.   The People's Pact has today (December 31, 2025) unveiled Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M'membe as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2026 general elections. UFEZ PROJECTS ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH TO EXCEED THE PROJECTED 6.4 PERCENT IN 2026.

  The United Federation of Employers in Zambia (UFEZ) says Zambia’s economic growth could exceed the projected 6.4 percent in 2026, driven by increased mining investment, recovery in agriculture, growth in the services and ICT sectors, and improved macroeconomic stability. Speaking during an end-of-year press briefing, UFEZ President Dr Humphrey Monde expressed support for the operationalization of the 24-Hour Economy, describing it as critical to expanding employment opportunities, improving productivity in the service sector, and leveraging Zambia’s strategic position as a regional logistics hub. Dr Monde also praised Zambia’s strong economic performance in 2025, noting that the country has outpaced growth in the Southern African Development Community region and is well positioned to translate the momentum into increased investment and job creation. WORKS ON MPHAMBA BRIDGE IN LUNDAZI COMMENCE.

  The Road Development Agency (RDA) has advised public and all road users that, due to ongoing flash floods, both approaches to the Mphamba Bridge leading to Chief Chitungulu in Lundazi District, Eastern Province have been washed away and consequently, the bridge is impassable and unsafe for all traffic. RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa says Mphamba Bridge is situated on the Lundazi–Chitungulu Road, approximately 1 kilometre from the Lundazi Central Business District. Mr. Mulowa has advised motorists and the travelling public intending to use this route to reschedule their travel plans until further notice. He says the RDA is currently on site and has commenced remedial works to address this emergency. LCC RECORDS HIGHER MALE DEATHS IN 2025 MORTALITY STATISTICS.

  The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has, by 30th December 2025, recorded a total of 17,750 deaths in Lusaka, as indicated through the disposal of remains done through the Department of Public Health between January and December 2025. Council PUBLIC Relations Manager Chola Mwamba says among the disposed bodies are 7,420 male adults and 1,843 male children who died during this period, in addition to 1,043 male stillbirths. Ms. Mwamba says this indicates a higher mortality rate among males in the city for this year. Meanwhile, the Council recorded 5,155 female adult deaths, 1,511 female child fatalities, and 778 female stillbirths during the same period. She says all deceased individuals were disposed of in accordance with the law, adhering to the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019 and the Public Health Act, Cap 295. LUAPULA SET TO HOST SECOND INVESTMENT EXPO

Luapula Province is gearing up to host the Second Edition of the Luapula Expo, a major investment and business showcase expected to reposition the province as a prime destination for local and international investors. Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Prudence Kangwa disclosed the development during the Fourth Quarter Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) Meeting held in Mansa on Tuesday, stating that the Provincial Administration has commenced earnest preparations to revive the Expo, last hosted in 2017. Mrs. Kangwa said the Expo is tentatively scheduled for 17th to 21st April, 2026, with Mansa’s Kaole Stadium earmarked as the preferred venue to accommodate exhibitors under one roof through the erection of marquees, enhancing coordination and visibility. LUAPULA PROVINCE MINISTER DIRECTS COUNCILS TO PROCURE EARTH-MOVING EQUIPMENT USING CDF.

  Luapula Province Minister Eng. Nason Musonda has instructed all local authorities in the province to immediately prioritize the procurement of earth-moving equipment using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), in line with a Presidential directive on decentralized road maintenance. Speaking during the Fourth Quarter Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) meeting held in Mansa on Tuesday morning, Eng. Musonda said there is no justification for councils to delay the acquisition of graders, tipper trucks and other essential equipment, warning that all councils must have a full set by the first quarter of 2026. “The New Dawn Administration has decentralized governance. NRFA RETRACTS PROPOSED TOLL FEE INCREASE

  The National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has informed the public and all road users that the recently announced increase in toll fees for selected motor vehicles has been withdrawn with immediate effect. This is in order to allow for the signing and publication of the requisite Statutory Instruments by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development. Accordingly, existing toll fees remain unchanged at all NRFA operated Toll Gates across the country and the three Toll Gates under MOIC-LN Consortium Limited   on the Lusaka-Ndola Road. SEVEN INJURED IN BUS ACCIDENT

December 30, 2025 – The Zambia Police Service in Lusaka has recorded a serious road traffic accident in which seven (7) passengers sustained injuries. The incident occurred on December 30, 2025, around 04:50 hours, along the Great North Road near Ngwerere Roundabout. The accident involved a Zhongtong bus bearing registration number BBC 4497, property of B.A. Logistics, which was being driven by Chitalu Gift, aged 31. The bus was heading towards the Chisamba direction. There were seven (7) passengers on board who sustained various injuries. All the injured persons were rushed to Matero Level One Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred after the driver lost control of the bus due to excessive speed. The bus initially hit a street light pole on the left side of the road before subsequently ramming into a nearby shop. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.   Minister of Energy and Chairperson of the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) Council of Ministers, Mr. Makozo Chikote, has reaffirmed Zambia and Zimbabwe’s commitment to strategic power generation and transmission investments aimed at enhancing energy security, resilience and regional integration. 800 CASES OF CIGARETTES WORTH K7.8 MILLION IN REVENUE SEIZED.

  The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has intercepted a truck with 800 cases of smuggled Vikings Cigarettes with revenue loss of K7.8 million. ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala says the goods were on a truck with registration number LZ 46 TN GP en route from South Africa, transiting through Chirundu, and destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo. The truck had been declared as carrying assorted household items in transit. However, Mr. Nzala says a trail by vigilant Zambia Revenue Authority officers followed the vehicle to a warehouse in Lusaka's Garden House where the offloading was scheduled. He says an inspection conducted at the warehouse discovered boxes of Vikings cigarettes concealed within the consignment. Mr. Nzala says following the discovery, the warehouse was secured and sealed. TRIDENT FOOTBALL CLUB PARTS WAYS WITH COACH MANCHI JANZA

  Trident Football Club has parted ways with the Technical Bench led by Coach Manchi Janza with immediate effect.   This decision follows an internal technical review of the Club’s set objectives for the season and has been made in the best interest of the Club as it looks ahead going forward.   The Club will, in due course, appoint a new Technical Bench ahead of the resumption of the season.   Speaking on the development, Club Chief Executive Officer Mvula Mangulenje stated that the Club holds Coach Manchi Janza and his Technical Bench in high respect, appreciates their efforts, and wishes them every success in their future endeavors.   Mangulenje says Trident Football Club remains fully committed to its vision and objectives and will continue working diligently to achieve success both on and off the pitch.   By Evans Sinjela  

LUSAKA AND EASTERN PROVINCE RECONNECTED.

  The Road Development Agency (RDA), in collaboration with the Zambia National Service (ZNS), has successfully completed works on a detour to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic at the washed away section of the Great East Road at Kankumba Stream. In a statement RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa says installation works on an ACROW Bridge across the washed away section have significantly advanced which will provide a temporary but safe crossing for road users and is expected to be completed by around 18:00 hours today. Mr. Mulowa says the affected section of the Great East Road at Kankumba Stream was washed away on 25th December 2025 following heavy rainfall experienced in the area which resulted in the loss of approximately five metres of the road embankment due to the failure of an Armco (steel) culvert. LUAPULA PROVINCE PS WARNS COUNCILS OVER POOR CDF UTILISATION

  Luapula Province Permanent Secretary PRUDENCE KANGWA has warned local authorities that fail to properly utilize the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) that Government will closely monitor and take action against erring councils. Mrs Kangwa issued the warning on Friday during a tour and commissioning of CDF-funded projects dotted across Mwense District, where she emphasized that the increased CDF allocation is meant to deliver tangible development and transform lives at community level. She noted that CDF currently stands at K36.1 million per constituency per year and will increase to K40 million per constituency per year in 2026, translating to about K600 million for Luapula Province’s fifteen (15) constituencies. HEAVY RAINS DELAY THE RECONNECTION OF THE GREAT EAST ROAD.

  Heavy rains have delayed the reconnection of the Great East Road at Kankhumba stream in Rufunsa district where culverts were washed away on Thursday afternoon. In a joint statement issued by Lusaka Provincial Administration Principal Public Relations Officer Logic Lukwanda and Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer   Paul Shalala, initially, traffic was expected to begin flowing through a detour being put by the Road Development Agency and Zambia National Service. Works commenced yesterday and engineers continued working throughout the night to ensure restoration of traffic. The placing of culverts on the detour that is crossing the same stream is underway as works have reached 60 percent before the diversion is ready for traffic. Engineers on the ground have projected that traffic will be restored late afternoon today as speed in works has been prioritized.   Chipolopolo head coach Moses Sichone says Zambia faced a tough test against Comoros in their second AFCON 2025 group match last evening at King Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, which ended in a 0-0 stalemate. “Comoros played as we expected. For now, we just have to focus on our next game against Morocco, who will enjoy home advantage. We need to prepare, plan, and aim to beat them,” Sichone said. The coach admitted that Zambia lacked the killer punch in the first half, particularly on the wings, which he described as “flat.” He spoke to the players at halftime and saw improvements in the second half. “Our system seemed to tire out striker Patson Daka in the first half, and some players did not come out as desired . FAZ Vice President Mutale Ng’andu says he is confident of a positive result as the Chipolopolo prepare for tonight’s decisive group match against Comoros. Ng’andu who is also delegation leader at the AFCON in Morocco, says the team heads into the encounter highly motivated by a smooth and well-managed AFCON journey so far, which he attributes to proper planning and strong Government support. He says Football House is grateful to Government for facilitating the team’s pre-tournament camp in Spain, noting that the decision played a key role in preparing the squad for conditions in Morocco. “Choosing Spain as our camping site was well thought out and we are grateful to Government for this gesture,” Ng’andu said.   Heavy rains tore through the Great East Road collapsing the road and severing Lusaka’s vital link to Eastern Province. Within hours of the disaster alert, the Zambia National Service Commander Lt Gen Eng Maliti Solochi II was boots-on-the-ground at the washed-out site in Rufunsa District, surveying the damage firsthand. “We moved the moment we got the word,” he said, announcing an urgent fix.   “Equipment has already been mobilized and is on the way to ensure that works begin without delay," the Service Chief said. He has revealed that a detour will be made immediately as the works on installing an acrow bridge will be undertaken to allow for passage of traffic. Works are set to begin at dawn, with a three-day emergency bridge installation planned.
