UFEZ PROJECTS ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH TO EXCEED THE PROJECTED 6.4 PERCENT IN 2026.
The United Federation of Employers in Zambia (UFEZ) says Zambia’s economic growth could exceed the projected 6.4 percent in 2026, driven by increased mining investment, recovery in agriculture, growth in the services and ICT sectors, and improved macroeconomic stability.
Speaking during an end-of-year press
briefing, UFEZ President Dr Humphrey Monde expressed support for the
operationalization of the 24-Hour Economy, describing it as critical to
expanding employment opportunities, improving productivity in the service
sector, and leveraging Zambia’s strategic position as a regional logistics hub.
Dr Monde also praised Zambia’s strong
economic performance in 2025, noting that the country has outpaced growth in
the Southern African Development Community region and is well positioned to
translate the momentum into increased investment and job creation.
Meanwhile, Dr. Monde raised concern over
the economic cost of road traffic accidents, which are estimated to cost the
country about K16.7 billion annually, representing 4.7 percent of Gross
Domestic Product, according to a UNDP Zambia Road Safety Investment Case study.
Dr Monde has since urged Government to urgently
establish truck parks along major transport corridors, fully implement the
National Road Safety Strategy for 2022 to 2026, deploy integrated
technology-based road safety data systems, accelerate the shift of bulk cargo
from road to rail, and mandate fleet safety management systems for commercial
operators.
