MANSA AIRPORT CONSTRUCTION PROGRESSES TO 27 PERCENT, SET TO BOOST LUAPULA CONNECTIVITY
Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Prudence Chinama-Kangwa says the completion of the Mansa Airport upgrade project will significantly enhance air connectivity and accelerate socio-economic development in the province.
Mrs. Chinama-Kangwa said this when Zambia Airports Corporation (ZAC) Mansa Airport Manager, Davies Kamalata, called on her at her office in Mansa this morning.
She noted that the airport project, which commenced in July this year and is expected to be completed within 17 months, has so far reached 27 percent completion, against a 30 percent target for 2025, describing the progress as encouraging.
The Permanent Secretary thanked Zambia Airports Corporation for recognising the contribution of the Provincial Administration in the management and running of Luapula’s only airport, and emphasized the need for speedy completion of the project.
Mrs. Chinama-Kangwa observed that limited flight schedules currently inconvenience residents and investors, as travel has to align with available flight days, but expressed optimism that once completed, the upgraded airport will allow multiple daily flights, similar to other provinces.
She said improved air access will attract investment, tourism and residential development, adding that many prospective investors often inquire about the convenience of flights into Mansa and Luapula Province.
The Permanent Secretary further stated that the project aligns with the Presidential directive to ensure all provinces have airports operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, noting that meaningful development in Luapula cannot be achieved without a fully functional airport.
She also commended President Hakainde Hichilema and the New Dawn Administration for prioritising infrastructure development, which she said has renewed interest in Luapula Province and highlighted its vast economic potential.
Earlier, Mansa Airport Manager Davies Kamalata commended the Provincial leadership for the continued support rendered to the airport, saying the collaboration has contributed to the steady progress being recorded on the project.
The 740-million-Kwacha Mansa Airport upgrade, being undertaken in partnership with China Jiangsu, is expected to strengthen air connectivity and position Luapula Province for increased investment in tourism, agriculture and hydro-power. Once completed, the airport will be capable of 24-hour operations, enhancing both domestic and regional accessibility.
