ELVIS NKANDU CELEBRATES 241 MEDALS

The Government has commended the country’s athletes for their outstanding performance after winning a total of 241 medals at various international and continental competitions during the 2025 sporting year.

Speaking during a medal presentation ceremony held at the National Sports Development Centre (NASDEC), Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, described the achievement as a defining moment in Zambia’s sporting history and a clear demonstration of the country’s growing competitiveness on the global stage.

“The 241 medals we celebrate today are not just symbols of victory, they are stories of perseverance, discipline and resilience. Our athletes have proven that with the right support, Zambians can compete and excel anywhere in the world,” Hon. Nkandu said.

The Minister has paid tribute to athletes, coaches, managers, national sports federations and administrators for their collective role in nurturing talent and delivering results, noting that the success reflects strong coordination within the sports sector.

Nkandu has further reaffirmed government’s commitment to investing in sport, guided by the President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema’s directive to prioritize athlete welfare, infrastructure development and sustainable sports systems.

“Sport remains a powerful vehicle for national development, unity and international prestige. Our focus now is to institutionalise this success by improving facilities, investing in sports science and strengthening talent development pipelines,” the Minister stated.

He has disclosed that government is rolling out multi-sports facilities across the country, including football pitches, and multi-purpose courts.

The Minister observed that Zambia’s improved medal haul over the recent years demonstrates a shift from mere participation to strong global competitiveness, with the country outperforming some nations with larger populations and more advanced sports infrastructure.
