MUSLIM ASSOCIATION OF CHIPATA DONATES 250 RELIEF HAMPERS TO FLOOD VICTIMS IN LUNDAZI.
The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), under the Office of the Vice President, has received a donation of 250 food hampers from the Muslim Association of Chipata to support households affected by floods in Lundazi District.
Each hamper comprises mealie meal, cooking oil,
peanut butter, sugar, soap, tinned fish, blankets, second-hand clothes,
matches, and other essential items aimed at addressing the immediate needs of
affected families.
The donation was formally handed over during a
ceremony held at Chongololo School in Chipata, attended by Government officials
and members of the Muslim Association of Chipata.
Speaking during the event, DMMU National
Coordinator, Mr. Norman Chipakupaku, commended the Muslim Association of
Chipata for the timely and generous support, noting that the donation reflects
strong values of compassion, solidarity, and service to humanity.
He stated that the floods caused extensive damage to
homes, food stocks, and livelihoods in Lundazi District, displacing families
and disrupting social and economic activities.
Mr. Chipakupaku emphasized that partnerships with
faith-based organisations play a critical role in complementing Government
efforts, especially in times when humanitarian needs remain high.
He assured stakeholders that the donated items would
be distributed to the intended beneficiaries in a fair, transparent, and
accountable manner, and appealed to other faith-based organisations,
cooperating partners, and the private sector to emulate the good example set by
the Muslim Association of Chipata in supporting disaster-affected communities.
Earlier, the Eastern Province Provincial Permanent
Secretary, Mr. Paul Benjamin Thole, welcomed the donation and reaffirmed the
Government’s commitment to working with partners to respond effectively to
disasters and humanitarian emergencies.
Speaking at the same event, Muslim Association of
Chipata representative, Mr. Yahya Collector, said the donation comprised items
contributed by members of the Muslim community, who collectively mobilised
resources and assembled the relief packs. He explained that the Association was
compelled to make the donation in order to supplement Government efforts in
providing humanitarian assistance to families affected by the floods in Lundazi
District.
Mr. Collector further stated that the Muslim
Association of Chipata has continued to support communities through various
interventions, including the provision of farming inputs, food assistance, and
the drilling of water boreholes in Chipata, Katete, and other areas. He
reiterated the Association’ s commitment to sustained community support through
ongoing community service initiatives.
