A 27-year-old man from Mungwi District has been sentenced to four months of hard labor after being convicted of stealing weed killer worth K1,180 from his employer, Kalungwishi Sugar Estate Company.

Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Willie Banda was Elias Bwalya of Nseluka Village, Chief Chitimukulu’s chiefdom in Mungwi District, who was charged with one count of theft by servant, contrary to Sections 272 and 278 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that on December 15, 2025, in Kasama District, Bwalya, being a servant of Kalungwishi Sugar Estate Company, stole four litres of Matrix weed killer valued at K1,180, the property of the named company.

This was revealed when the matter came up for presentation of facts.

During the presentation of facts, Senior Public Prosecutor Aaron Kuyeli told the court that on December 15, 2025, the convict was found in possession of four bottles of weed killer belonging to the company.

He said when questioned, the convict failed to give a satisfactory explanation on how he came to possess the items.

Mr Kuyeli said the security guard later reported the matter to the police, where the convict was interviewed in Bemba, a language he understands better.

He added that under a warning and caution, the convict gave a voluntary confession admitting to committing the offence.
