ZAMBIA HOLDS JPC MEETING WITH DRC

 

The 14th Session of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security has opened in the city of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Mr Maambo Haamaundu has called on the two countries to tackle transnational organised crimes such as smuggling, illegal migration and human trafficking.

Mr. Haamaundu, who is Co-Chairperson of the Senior Officials Meeting which has opened today, said organised crime is a source of concern as it jeopardizes national security.

Mr. Haamaundu said terrorism is another threat that can spread across countries if not curtailed.

"It will be important for delegates to take advantage of the session to devise strategies that would assist to curb the aforementioned vices," he said.

Mr. Haamaundu said Zambia is committed to continued cooperation with the Democratic Republic of Congo in order to ensure sustainable peace and security along the common border and the region at large.

And Democratic Republic of Congo Chief of Staff in the Office of the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Security and Traditional Affairs, Iteku Jean Baelongandi, said the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security comes at a time when the DRC is having security challenges in the eastern part of the country.

Mr. Baelongandi said Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo are brotherly countries that share common interests and values. 

"Therefore, it is our duty to work closely and without complacency to find solutions to the problems that plague us," he said.

The Senior Officials Meeting is expected to end tomorrow and on Thursday, the Joint Permanent Commission will culminate into the Ministerial Meeting when Minister of Defence Hon Ambrose Lwiji

Lufuma, MP and his DRC counterpart join the Joint Permanent Commission.

Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary Mr Dickson Matembo, Zambia National Service Commander Lt Gen Eng Maliti Solochi II, Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General Mr. Frederick Chilukutu and Zambia Police Service Deputy Inspector

General Administration Charity Munganga are part of the Zambian delegation.
