ZAMBIA'S LOS ANGELES 2028 OLYMPIC GAMES RECEIVES A BOOST

Zambia’s preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games have received a significant boost following the awarding of Olympic Solidarity Scholarships by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ten Zambian athletes, administered through the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ).

Speaking during the scholarship awarding ceremony held at the Golden Peacock Hotel in Lusaka, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, Mr. Kangwa Chileshe, welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for athletes to excel at the highest level.

Mr. Chileshe commended the National Olympic Committee of Zambia for administering the IOC-supported programme with transparency and integrity, noting that the selection process was conducted in close collaboration with National Sports Associations to identify athletes with exceptional talent, discipline and potential.

He said the Olympic Solidarity Scholarships represent more than financial support, as they provide beneficiaries with access to world-class training facilities, international competition exposure and specialised technical support as part of their preparations for the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

The Permanent Secretary congratulated the scholarship recipients and urged them to remain focused and disciplined, emphasising the importance of utilising the opportunity to its fullest potential as they prepare to represent Zambia on the global stage.

Mr. Chileshe further assured stakeholders that government, through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, will continue strengthening partnerships with the National Olympic Committee of Zambia and other key institutions to support athlete development and monitor the progress of the scholarship beneficiaries.

National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) president, Mr. Alfred Foloko, said the Olympic Solidarity Scholarships demonstrate the International Olympic Committee’s continued confidence in Zambia’s sporting potential.

He further noted that the scholarships are designed to provide targeted, long-term support to athletes with genuine prospects of qualifying for the Olympic Games.

The IOC Olympic Solidarity programme is designed to assist National Olympic Committees worldwide in athlete development and Olympic preparation, while promoting excellence, inclusivity and equal opportunity in sport.

This is according to a statement issued by Nchimunya Ng'andu Principal Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts.
