MINISTER OF INFRASTRACTURE URGES SPEEDY OF KATETE CHANIDA ROAD PROJECT
Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister, Hon. Eng. Charles Lubasi Milupi, has called on the Concessionaire undertaking works on the Katete-Chanida Road in Eastern Province to accelerate progress on the project.
During a tour of the road today, Hon. Milupi emphasized the strategic importance of the Katete-Chanida Road, describing it as vital to boosting Zambia’s economy through trade and commerce.
“This is a critical road, with about 70 percent of the full stock from the Port of Beira transported via this route. To grow the economy, we must strengthen trade with our neighbors, and that requires efficient road connectivity,” he said.
The Government, through the Road Development Agency (RDA), has signed a Concession Agreement with Messrs. Lutembwe Consulting Company Limited to rehabilitate the Katete-Chanida Road and construct a new border facility at Chanida to One Stop Border Post (OSBP) standards.
The project is being implemented under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) financing model.
Representatives of the Concessionaire disclosed that approximately K110 million worth of works have already been executed using equity funds.
They further assured that substantial progress will be made this year, with completion expected early next year.
RDA Board Chairman, Eng. Eugene Haazele, who accompanied the Minister, stressed that quality and safety standards must remain paramount throughout the project.
He urged the Concessionaire to adhere to sound project management practices.
Eng. Haazele also expressed concern over the vandalism of road signage, appealing to local communities to safeguard these critical installations.
The Minister was joined on the tour by National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) Board Chairman, Mr. Noel Nkhoma, who also serves as a member of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Council.
