OVER 2,000 TEACHERS PARTICIPATE IN KOPALA TEACHERS RUN
Over 2,000 teachers from across the country have participated in the inaugural Copperbelt Education Expo and the Kopala Teachers’ Run, an initiative by the Ministry of Education aimed at celebrating teachers for their contribution to national development.
The two-day event commenced with an Education Exhibition held at the Copperbelt University, where more than 50 schools and local authorities showcased educational innovations, learning tools, and best practices within the sector. The exhibition provided a platform for knowledge sharing and highlighted efforts being made to improve the quality of education in Zambia.
The second day featured the Kopala Teachers’ Run and aerobics activities, which were organised to promote physical fitness, mental wellness, and overall wellbeing among teachers. Officers from the Ministry as well as the National Sports Council of Zambia also participated in the run, which featured both 10km and 5km races.
Speaking after the run, the Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, represented by Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary Mr. Lawrence Mwanza commended the Ministry of Education for introducing an initiative focused on teacher wellness. He noted that physically and mentally healthy teachers are better positioned to deliver effective teaching and positively impact learners.
Nkandu has further emphasised the importance of integrating health and fitness into the education sector, describing teachers as key partners in national development.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Sports Director, Mr. Gibson Muyaule, praised the Ministry of Education for being a major contributor to sports talent in the country, noting that many athletes who represent Zambia at various sporting events originate from the education system.
As part of the programme, the Ministry’s Anti-Doping Team also engaged teachers and other participants during the run. Anti-Doping Officer Mr. Raphael Mulenga encouraged teachers to take the lead in sensitising learners on anti-doping messages within their schools.
Nkandu currently serves as Vice President of the UNESCO Convention against Doping in Sport for the 2026–2027 10th Conference of Parties (COP10) Bureau, while the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary, Mr. Kangwa Chileshe, is Chairperson of the UNESCO Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG), a reform-driven technical working group under UNESCO.
The inaugural Teachers’ Run, which attracted participants from all ten provinces of Zambia, was held under the theme “My Teacher, My Pride.”
