UNZA STUDENTS ENGAGE MINISTER OF YOUTH, SPORTS AND ATRS ON ENTERPRENEURSHIP

The University of Zambia Development Studies Association (UNZADESA), a student-led organisation of development studies students at the University of Zambia, this afternoon met with the Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Hon. Elvis C Nkandu, to discuss ways of strengthening student engagement in entrepreneurship and the creative sector.

UNZADESA led by its president Mary Moonga emphasised that the initiative is aimed at promoting the interests of students.

She explained that this year’s focus is on nurturing entrepreneurship among students, highlighting the wealth of untapped talent among academically engaged youth.

Ms. Moonga says many talented students struggle to harness their creative skills because of the intense focus on academic pursuits, yet believe that creative industries can generate jobs for both students and the wider community if properly supported.

“Creative industries are not just a pastime but a viable source of employment. Students want space to express their talents while pursuing their academics, these can go hand in hand,” she said.

Nkandu reaffirmed the government’s belief that the creative sector is key to national development, noting continued efforts to engage both local and international partners to strengthen the industry.

The Minister welcomed the role of young people in growing the sector, emphasising that youth energy and innovation are critical to its success.

He has further encouraged UNZADESA members to take advantage of opportunities such as the upcoming Youth Week and the Creative Business Summit, assuring them that students will be given space at these platforms to showcase their ideas.

He also called on students to actively participate in Ministry events beyond Youth Day, including careers fairs and entrepreneurship fairs, stressing that such engagements broaden their understanding of the job market and opportunities available to young Zambians.
