GOVERNMENT ENGAGES IMISEPELA APP DEVELOPERS
Government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people through digital innovation following the launch of the Imisepela App, a platform designed to connect youths to opportunities.
Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Mr. Kangwa Chileshe made the remarks during a meeting with developers of the application on Monday in Lusaka.
The meeting follows the recent launch of the platform by President Hakainde Hichilema, who introduced the application as part of government’s efforts to make opportunities more accessible to young people across the country.
Mr. Chileshe said the Imisepela App represents an important step in ensuring that young people can easily access information on jobs, entrepreneurship opportunities, skills development programmes, and other initiatives aimed at improving their livelihoods.
He said technology has become a key driver of development, adding that digital platforms such as Imisepela are helping place opportunities directly into the hands of young people.
Mr. Chileshe noted that Zambia is a youthful nation whose energy, creativity and resilience remain a vital national asset. He said empowering young people with the right tools and information is essential for national development.
Meanwhile, Smart Zambia Institute National Coordinator, Mr. Percy Chinyama, said government was pleased to support a solution that responds to the needs of a large portion of the country’s population.
Mr. Chinyama said initiatives such as the Imisepela App demonstrate government’s commitment to putting in place long-term solutions that support young people in building sustainable livelihoods.
He added that the platform helps shift the focus away from dependency and entitlement, while creating an environment that encourages growth, innovation and productivity among young people.
Mr. Chinyama also disclosed that the application has quickly gained popularity, becoming the number one app in Zambia on both apple store and google play store with more than 128,000 downloads within just a few days of its launch.
New features are expected to be rolled out soon, including an employer dashboard, smart search functions, youth internship opportunities and improved approval processes.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security Mr. Zacharia Luhanga said the introduction of the application comes at a critical time when about 4.5 million people in Zambia are either employed or actively seeking employment.
Mr. Luhanga revealed that the country’s Labour Market Information System will soon be integrated with the Imisepela App to improve access to employment data and opportunities.
He further announced that government will soon pilot an internship programme involving 1,000 interns across various ministries.
Mr. Luhanga added that all interns participating in the programme will be required to have social security numbers, in line with international labour standards supported by the International Labour Organization.
