MINISTER OF YOUTH SPORTS AND ARTS COMMENDS KANSANSHI MINES PLC FOR SUPPORTING YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Government has commended Kansanshi Mine PLC for its continued investment in the development of youth, sport and the arts, saying the mine’s efforts are complementing government programmes aimed at empowering young people.
Speaking during a meeting with Kansanshi Mine PLC management, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, said the private sector plays a critical role in supporting government initiatives, adding that partnerships with institutions such as Kansanshi Mine help expand opportunities for young people to thrive in different fields.
He noted that many youths who could have been involved in illicit activities are instead being supported through sports and other programmes facilitated by the mine.
The Minister further praised the mine for its huge investment in sports infrastructure and activities in Solwezi, including the rehabilitation of Independence Stadium and its support to activities leading up to Youth Day on March 12, 2026.
He added that private partners have continued to complement government efforts in various areas, including supporting sporting events and the development of coaches.
Meanwhile, Kansanshi Mine PLC General Manager, Mr. Meiring Burger, said the mine believes sport plays an important role in the development of any nation.
He explained that the company currently supports more than 400 athletes and continues to invest in nurturing young talent in the community.
Mr. Burger said Kansanshi Mine also supports over 30 sporting events every year, with its flagship sporting event, the Kansanshi marathon continuing to grow annually and expected to attract even more than 2, 500 participants this year.
He further highlighted that the mine has been facilitating opportunities for local athletes to compete at higher levels, including sending one of its athletes to participate in the Comrades Marathon, one of the world’s most prestigious ultra-distance races.
Mr. Burger emphasized that the community remains central to Kansanshi Mine’s initiatives, adding that the company will continue working with partners to promote sports development and youth empowerment in the region.
