PS THABO MEETS EU DELEGATION
Fellow Citizens;
Today, we had the pleasure of receiving a courtesy call from the European Union (EU) Delegation at our office. Our discussion centered on the evolving media landscape in Zambia and the various reforms the UPND New Dawn Government under the able leadership of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema is implementing to foster a free and professional media environment.
During our meeting, we reaffirmed that media freedom has been significantly enhanced in our country since we took office. We believe that a well-informed populace is the cornerstone of a thriving democracy.
We informed the delegation that the enacted Access to Information law is a clear testament to the UPND New Dawn Government’s unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability. This law empowers every Zambian to hold public duty-bearers accountable.
Further, we reiterated our stance that no media house will be closed under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema as long as they operate within the law. We are committed to ensuring a safe environment for all journalists.
We also discussed the need for ethical reporting and collaborative efforts to safeguard the integrity of public information by countering misinformation and disinformation.
Government remains an open and inclusive partner, and we will continue to enhance the environment for media practitioners to do their work without hindrance.
Thabo Kawana
Permanent Secretary
Ministry of Information and Media
