ZAMBIA CALLS FOR ENHANCED REGIONAL COOPERATION ON MIGRATION
The Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Mr. Jack Mwiimbu, says Zambia continues to experience an influx of migrants and refugees, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated efforts among countries along key migration routes.
Mr. Mwiimbu emphasized the importance of enhanced
regional cooperation in addressing migration challenges affecting the region.
The Minister said this when he paid a courtesy call
on the Zambia High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of his official visit
to attend a meeting convened by the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) on comprehensive solutions for Burundian refugees.
Mr. Mwiimbu highlighted the importance of
strengthening collaboration between Zambia and Kenya in areas of security,
migration management and information sharing.
He stressed that sustained regional dialogue remains
critical in developing durable solutions to displacement and irregular
migration.
The Minister further underscored the need to deepen
economic cooperation among African countries, noting that increased
intra-African trade and investment are key to building economic resilience and
driving growth.
He encouraged stronger bilateral engagement between
Zambia and Kenya to promote tourism, improve service delivery standards and
attract investment.
Mr. Mwiimbu also commended Kenya for its progress
across various sectors and expressed Zambia’s interest in learning from the
country’s best practices to enhance its own development initiatives.
The Minister was accompanied by the Executive
Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR),
Mubita Luwabelwa, and other senior government officials.
Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Alfred
Musemuna, welcomed the Minister and his delegation, expressing appreciation for
