ZAMBIA COMMEMORATES WOMEN'S DAY

Today, Zambia joins the global community in marking International Women’s Day.

This year’s celebration follows the passage of the Amended Constitution in 2025, which paves the way for greater representation of women, youths, and persons with disabilities. Even before votes are counted in the August 13 elections, the new provisions guarantee 20 seats for women in Parliament, 15 for youths, and 5 for persons with disabilities. The same approach will be applied within local government structures across the country.

During my 10 years working within the women’s movement, at Non-governmnantal Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) our central advocacy goal was to ensure that more women take part in decision making at every level. The reasoning is straightforward: when women have a seat at the table, they can shape development priorities that reflect their needs. As the majority of our population, women deserve full participation in leadership spaces. Today, the women of Zambia celebrate this significant achievement, made possible under the visionary leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Happy Women’s Day!

Zambia is rising, with President Hichilema championing inclusive leadership.
