ELEPHANT KILLS A PERSON IN CHAMA DISTRICT



Lusaka, Zambia – 5th  April 2026


A  37-year-old male, identified as Mr. Patrick Kabandama has died after being injured by an elephant in Chama District. 


Ministry of Tourism says Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased encountered the animal while attempting to drive a herd of elephants away from his maize field during the evening hours.


The matter was promptly reported to the Zambia Police Service and officers from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife have since been deployed to the area to enhance security and safeguard the community.

The elephant herd involved in the incident remains within the vicinity and efforts are underway to manage the situation and prevent further risk to human life and property.


The Ministry is deeply saddened by this tragic loss and extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire community of Katangalika Village.

And commenting on the incident, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism stated,  Evans Muhanga expressed sadness by the loss of life in this unfortunate incident.


Muhanga said " Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and the people of Katangalika Village during this difficult time. Government, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, has taken immediate steps to secure the area and protect the community.”


The Permanent Secretary has further emphasized Government’s commitment to addressing human-wildlife conflict:


He said “Human-wildlife conflict remains a serious concern in areas bordering protected ecosystems. We are intensifying our efforts to implement sustainable mitigation measures, including enhanced community sensitisation, rapid response interventions, and control of problem animals where necessary to prevent further loss of life and livelihoods.”


Mr. Muhanga said Government remains committed to strengthening human-wildlife conflict mitigation measures, particularly in areas bordering wildlife habitats. 

He said in this regard, DNPW is actively assessing the situation and will implement appropriate interventions to control the problem animal and minimize further incidents.


The PS has advised Members of the public in affected areas to exercise caution, avoid approaching wildlife and promptly report any sightings of problem animals to the nearest wildlife authorities.
