SPORTS MINISTER COMMISSIONS MULTI SPORTS FACILITY IN MONZE

Government has commissioned the rehabilitation of Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula Stadium in Monze District, Southern Province, into a multi-sport complex.

Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis  Nkandu, MP, graced the ground-breaking ceremony in Monze, describing the project as a key step in expanding access to sports infrastructure across the country.

He said the development reflects government’s commitment to decentralising sporting facilities and bringing opportunities closer to communities.

Nkandu noted that the project goes beyond infrastructure, positioning sport as a tool for youth empowerment and national development.

“This facility is a testament to our resolve to ensure that young people across the country have access to platforms where they can nurture and showcase their talent,” he said.

The upgraded complex will cater for multiple disciplines, including football, basketball, netball and volleyball, and is expected to serve as a hub for sporting excellence in Southern Province.

The facility is also expected to help address social challenges among young people by promoting constructive activities and discouraging crime, substance abuse and idleness.

Also present at the event were Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu and Southern Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa.

Nkandu said the initiative aligns with efforts to grow sport into a viable economic sector capable of creating jobs for athletes, coaches and administrators.

He added that improved access to sports infrastructure is critical in promoting healthy lifestyles and combating non-communicable diseases.

The minister also commended the collaboration between central government and the Monze local authority, which facilitated the availability of land for the project.

This is according to a statement issued by Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts Principal Public Relations Officer, Nchimunya Ng'andu.
