Promoting Abortions and Abortion Care in Zambia Instead of Curbing High Maternal and Infant Mortality Rates.
Patriotic Front (PF) Chairperson for Information and Public Emmanuel Mwamba says there is an aggressive movement promoting abortions in Zambia.
Mr. Mwamba says in many cases abortions are done
outside the Teination of Pregnacy Act of 1972.
He says also in many cases promoters have exploited
the provisions discouraging the continuation of the pregnancy that state that
certain circumstances around the mother or existing children pose a greater
risk to the pregnant woman's life or physical/mental health making such
provisions to offer abortions literally on the counter.
Mr. Mwamba says this excuse is also used to promote
abortions as a solution against teen pregnacies.
He says sometimes the arguments around "safe
abortions" is used to legalise or attempt distigmatise abortions.
Mr. Mwamba says there is also a sneaky method to use
"universal health access and coverage" amd sexual reproductive health
as a right to abortion and to include the provisions of "safe
abortions".
He says many will remember a ban he issued when he was
Permanent Secretary in Northern Province and inadvertently discovered that an
international organisation was providing over 400 abortions a month under a
field outreach program to purportedly screen teens and women of STDs and
cervical cancer.
Mr. Mwamba says instead of promoting life,
organisations such as the International Midwifes Organizations now openly
promote abortions.
He has urged government to be alert and help direct
resources and skills to instead support policies and programs that prevent both
the current high and alarming maternal and infant mortality rates than promote
abortions and abortion care.
Mr. Mwamba has urged the Zambian Media to attend the
event on May 18th 2026 and ask the organisers the right questions.
